On Monday, Sep. 26, Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton faced off in the first presidential debate at Hofstra University, in New York. While Trump held himself together for the first 30 minutes of the debate, it became very obvious that Clinton was ready to attack Trump at all angles with little to no rebuttals from Trump.

As expected, Clinton and Trump harassed each other about tax returns and emails.

“Maybe he is not as rich as he says he is,” said Clinton. “Maybe he is not as charitable as he says he claims to be. Maybe he doesn’t want the American people to know that he has paid nothing in federal taxes. There is something that he is hiding.”

Trump took Clinton’s bait and came close to conveying the real reason he has not released his tax returns. Trump almost claimed that he did not pay federal taxes and then went on to say that American tax money is not used the way it should be. However, Trump did not convey why he still decides to keep his tax returns a secret.

“I will release them, as soon as she releases her 33,000 emails,” said Trump.

Trump’s words came back to haunt him last night. Clinton repeatedly used Trump’s tweets and interviews, in which Trump claimed many times that he never said any of it. Clinton stated that Trump believes that “climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese.” While Trump denied that he ever said that, the most-retweeted item on Twitter during the debate surfaced.

The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive,” said Trump in a 2010 tweet.

Clinton had Trump right where she wanted him.

“I hope the fact-checkers are turning up the volume,” said Clinton.

Clinton knew exactly what she was doing in every topic, especially when she targeted Trump with being disrespectful to women. Clinton brought up a beauty pageant from 1996 where Trump called a Latina contestant, “Little Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeper.” This information showed not only Trump’s disrespectful behavior towards women, but also showed his ignorance when it comes to race.

Her name is Alicia Machado, and she has become a US citizen,” said Clinton. “And you can bet she’s going to vote this November.”

At the end of the debate, Trump claimed that Clinton does not have the “stamina” to become president. Clinton shook off Trump’s ridiculous words with a laugh.

“As soon as you travel to 112 countries, negotiate peace deals with our top adversaries around the world and power through an 11-hour congressional witch hunt hearing,” said Clinton. “Then you can talk about stamina.”

Overall, Clinton was well prepared for the first debate.

“Yes, I did [prepare]. And you know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president.” said Clinton.

Early CNN polls the morning after the debate say that Clinton has a slight lead over Trump. Trump will have to prepare himself better for the second debate scheduled on Sunday, Oct.9.
