Week two of the 2021 NFL season featured many high scoring games and heartbreaking endings.
The first game of the week was between the New York Giants and the Washington Football Team on Thursday Night. Both teams came into this with a record of 0-1 and were looking to capture their first win of the season. This was a drama-filled game that came down to the very last play. The Football team received the ball, trailing 27-29 with two minutes remaining. Quarterback Taylor Henicke was able to pick up some crucial yards and put the Football Team into field goal range. Henicke spiked the ball with one second left, and the Football Team sent out their kicker Dustin Hopkins. Hopkins lined up for the 48-yarder and missed it wide to the right; the game seemed like it was over. However, the Giants were penalized for being offsides, which gave the Football Team an extra five yards and another opportunity. The Football Team gave Hopkins a second chance and sent him out to attempt the 43-yard field goal. Hopkins kicked it right down the middle, and the Football Team defeated the Giants 30-29.
The Minnesota Vikings went on the road to take on the Arizona Cardinals. This game was a very high-scoring affair that featured a heartbreaking ending. The Vikings knew that they were massive underdogs coming into this game. Instead of backing down, they used that as motivation and came into this game very prepared. On the second play of scrimmage Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins connected with receiver K.J. Osborn for a 64 yard touchdown, giving the Vikings the early 7-0 lead. The Vikings continued to shine on offense and went up 20-7 after Cousins threw two more touchdown passes. It seemed as if the Vikings were on their way to an easy victory. However, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray showed exactly why he is an MVP candidate. Murray led the Cardinals right back into it and they were able to take a 24-23 lead going into halftime. Both teams came into the second half with a different approach and focused more on the defensive side of the ball. The second half started off with a bang, as Vikings linebacker Nick Vigil picked off Murray and returned it all the way for a touchdown. The Vikings were able to pick off Murray once again in the second half. But they were not able to produce anything offensively, and the Cardinals were able to storm back once again. The Vikings trailed the Cardinals by one with two minutes left in the game. Quarterback Cousins was able to bring the offense right down the field and get them into field goal range. With four seconds left, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer sent out kicker Greg Joseph to attempt a 37-yard field goal. Joseph made multiple 50-plus-yard field goals that game so this one seemed like a chipshot. However, Joseph let his nerves get to him and missed the field goal wide right, which resulted in the Cardinals winning 34-33.
It has only been two weeks, but the 2021 NFL season is already off to an incredible start. There have been many close games that have come down to the end. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
