A new school year brings endless excitement; new friends, teachers, classes and this year happened to also bring along a new principal.

Many first impressions of Robert Grimm, might be “wow, he’s got style,” maybe it’s a South Carolina thing. Before becoming principal at LHS, Mr. Grimm was principal at a school in South Carolina. That school, having about 500-600 students, approximately 98 percent black students and 100 percent free or reduced lunch for the students, is quite different than LHS. LHS is one of the top rated schools is the state of SD and the previous school Grimm was at was rated the lowest in the entire state of SC before he started there.

“You couldn’t get any farther apart than that,” said Grimm. “They’re night and day difference. It really is crazy.”

Coming to such a different environment than what he previously was at, what could possibly be Grimm’s thoughts of LHS so far and the students? LHS is one of the best high schools in SD and is filled with amazing kids. Some students are involved in sports, band, clubs or are just simply students who can always make someone’s day. They are what make up LHS.

“Student wise, I think it’s amazing,” said Grimm. “I think you guys are unbelievably cool kids. You’re all so uniquely different than anything I’ve ever experienced in my professional career.”

Grimm’s goal for this school year is a goal that every high school should want to achieve. He wants to make sure that every student that is suppose to graduate, graduates. Along with that, Grimm wants to make sure that every student that leaves LHS is going to be prepared for college, and even if one decides not to go right away, they will be prepared when they choose to go later.

“I personally believe that should be everyone’s goal,” said Grimm. “Everyone should have an opportunity to if they so choose to, go to college.”
