Gas prices on the rise

Emily Whitney, News Editor

With gradual changes occurring over time, it is hard to notice the effects our current economy is having on gasoline prices. Lately, however, the sudden rise has gained attention from the public. The change is likely a result of upcoming sanctions President Trump is expected to impose on Iran.

The national average price currently sits at $2.81 a gallon. In the last month, prices have raised a whopping 15 cents. This is not expected to be the end of the climb either, more raises are likely coming soon. According to CNN, once the prices hit their peak, over 20 states will have an average price of over $3.00. The good news about this estimate is that they are expected to drop following the peak.

Although these prices are higher than we have been used to lately considering less than 4 percent had over three dollars, they are significantly better than four years ago with the common price was around $3.70 a gallon.

Even with the difference only at a nickel or a dime per gallon, it can equate to hundreds of more dollars spent over time. AAA gives the following tips to reserve gas and save money:

  • Carpool or use public transit.
  • Slow down. If you travel at 60 mph instead of 70 mph on your 20-mile highway commute, you would save about 1.3 gallons of gas in a five-day work week.
  • Combine errands. If possible, park in a central spot and walk from place to place.
  • Shop online and use online services
  • Choose a smaller, fuel efficient car for longer trips.
  • Hike or bike. You will burn less gas and more calories.
  • Work from home, if possible.
  • Replace “dinner and a movie” dates with dinner parties. You will save the mileage to restaurants and theaters.
  • Share school rides by carpooling with neighbors.
  • Do not use your trunk for storage. The heavier your car, the more fuel it uses.
