Questions and Answers

  • What made you interested in fashion and selling clothing to other people?

I love making and recycling clothing and finding unique ways to wear regular pieces of clothing. I can’t keep everything I thrift or make, so I thought selling it would be a fun way to make extra money!

  • Are you planning to use your love of fashion in the future?

It would be super fun to grow my thrifting business into something more serious in the future, but not really, I just do it for fun.

  • What is your thrifting “business” called and where can people find it?

It’s @threadsbysomer on Instagram.

  • What inspired you to make this small “business”?

Thrifting was originally just a hobby, but I decided it would be cool to sell the things that I don’t want or can’t keep but I know others would love and make some extra cash.

  • What type of clothing do you sell?

I sell all kinds of clothing and accessories, nothing specific, just what I think looks dope.

  • How do you go about finding the clothing you sell?

I usually spend a few hours every few days thrifting. I look at every single piece of clothing and accessory in the store whether its wayyy too small or wayyy too big, and I go to multiple thrift stores too, and just hope I get lucky.

  • What is different about buying clothing from you, rather than just going and thrifting it for yourself?

I think I have a pretty good eye for looking at a regular piece of clothing and putting it together with a super cool outfit in my head, so I think people like that I can do it for them rather than them trying to do it themselves.

  • Have you seen a lot of business/what are your goals?

Yeah, I have seen a lot of business, and it’s growing too! Honestly- it would just be cool to grow my account and make more money.

  • Is it easy to find things to sell?

In Sioux Falls, not always. I have to hit up 3 or 4 thrift stores before I get the good stuff. It’s easier in bigger cities.

  • What is the hardest part of having a small “business”?

Never knowing how much money you’re going to make. Sometimes I make $20 in a week or $300 in 3 days. It’s hard to stay consistent with your followers and buyers when you never know what the next week will look like.

  • How do you go about actually selling your clothing? How do you use social media or other platforms to do this?

I only use Instagram. I just post pictures of the clothes with a description and price, and people just message me and I meet up with them or I ship them.
