The end of an era
January 8, 2021
For the first time in 12 years, the NFL playoffs will not feature the New England Patriots. Under legendary coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots fell short of the postseason after a disappointing 7-9 season.
The Patriots suffered immensely this season due to COVID-19. This virus resulted in eight players choosing to opt-out of the season, including pro bowl linebacker Dont’a Hightower. The veteran would have provided much-needed help for the Patriots defense, one that gave up only 14 points per game in 2019. However, they were unable to repeat their success this season and gave up 22 points per game. The Patriots really could have used those eight players this season; however, Belichick supports their decisions.
“I respect all of them,” said Belichick. “I respect all the players on our team. We all have to make decisions. I talked to those guys, and they explained their situation. They had to make the decision that was best for them, and I totally respect and support it, 100 percent.”
The New England Patriots have won six Super Bowls in the past 18 years, due mainly to the success of quarterback Tom Brady. In his career with New England, he threw for 79,204 yards and 581 touchdowns. While breaking numerous postseason and regular-season records, he also won three NFL MVP awards and four Super Bowl MVP awards. However, all good things, unfortunately, come to an end. This offseason Brady signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, officially ending his time in New England.
“To all my teammates, coaches, executives and staff, Coach Belichick, RKK and the Kraft family and the entire organization, I want to say thank you for the past 20 years of my life and the daily commitment to winning and creating a winning club built on great values,” said Brady.
After Brady signed with Tampa Bay, the Patriots suddenly were in desperate need of a quarterback. As a result, they went out and signed former NFL MVP Cam Newton to a one year deal. However, the former MVP struggled tremendously this year, throwing for only 2,657 yards and eight touchdowns, while throwing 10 interceptions.
This was a very tough season for the Patriots. However, they still have a very talented roster and a legendary coach. They will look to improve this offseason, as they hold the 15th pick in the draft. It might have been a tough season for the Patriots fans but do not worry, they still have a bright future ahead of them.
