Dayglow, otherwise known as Sloan Struble, dropped the fourth album in his discography this past Friday. This self-titled album, “Dayglow,” has already blown up, as his last release” was back in 2022.
Struble is originally from Texas, where he started his career by releasing music on SoundCloud under the name “Kindred.” After dropping his first and arguably most popular album “Fuzzybrain,” Struble left college and began to pursue a successful career in the music industry. This new album is his first piece showing what it means to be his true self as Dayglow.
1. “Every Little Thing I Say I Do”
This song dropped as a single in May and is my favorite of the album. I love the repetition of the lyrics and the guitar that is featured in this track.
2. “Cocoon”
This song follows “Every Little Thing I Say I Do” on the album and in my ranking. I really liked the story of this song, as it describes somebody leaving or growing apart from somebody who “stayed a little long, a little long in the cocoon.” With my impending excitement of graduation and college, this song hits close to home.
3. “Nothing Ever Does!!!”
This is the only song with punctuation, as it is an emotional piece. Similarly to “Cocoon,” this song talks about all the changes that are happening and how they never stop. The track has a busy feeling; the ending has rushed and repeated lines saying, “nothing ever does” and seemingly stressed breathing. For me, this anxious feeling is very relatable.
4. “Mindless Creatures”
This is the first song of the album and does well to open the experience. This song reminded me the most of his other pieces, but as always, I love the guitar featured. He also mentions a past song/album in the line “Yeah, I was just 18, with a fuzzy brain” and I thought that was a very unique acknowledgment to his younger self.
5. “Broken Bone”
This song begins with a guitar riff which starts slowly and is followed by a build. This song’s story continues on the pattern of growth and self-improvement as Dayglow evolves into his new, true self.
6. “Weatherman”
Another song regarding change (a clear pattern in this self-titled album), “Weatherman” brings about not being able to anticipate change, just like how we can not truly predict the weather. At the end, the song picks up and includes another guitar riff, which I love.
7. “Silver Lining”
To me, this song can be used for romantic intentions or just friendship. It discusses someone who sees the best in others, and how these others feel valuable because of it, like a silver lining.
8. “This Feeling”
Another romantic song that talks about those feelings of love and affection. Dayglow seems to be confused because although another person may be used to those emotions, he is not quite there yet.
9. “Old Friend, New Face”
I still do not quite understand this song, which is why it is ranked low. What do you think it is about?
10. “What People Really Do”
This song felt kind of depressing, which is why I booted it to the bottom. The lyrics cover how life does not really have a point, but Dayglow wants to change that.
