March Madness first weekend updates and upsets

With weekend one of the NCAA Tournament in the books, there were quite a few notable upsets. In four full days of basketball, fans were kept on the edge of their seats as they watched their brackets bust one game at a time.

There were not many huge upsets in the Round of 64. Games that some could have considered upsets, people predicted. Upsets by seed included: 11 USC over 6 SMU, 11 Xavier over 6 Maryland, 11 URI over 6 Creighton, 12 Middle Tennessee over 5 Minnesota and 10 Wichita State over 7 Dayton. These upsets led to other upsets in the Round of 32, and most likely came from the underseeding of the teams by the NCAA Tournament Committee. Arguments for underseeding came especially for 12 Middle Tennessee, who came into the tournament after winning C-USA (Conference USA) with a 31-4 record. That is typically not a 12 seed, so there were many people who predicted them to win over 5 Minnesota. The same goes to Wichita State, who also had a 31-4 record after winning their conference, the Missouri Valley.

Upsets in the second round, the Round of 32, were bigger and better than anyone could have predicted. 8 Wisconsin bested the reigning National Champions and 1 Villanova. 7 Michigan won over national contender 2 Louisville in a big day for the Big Ten conference. That was followed by another huge upset in a 2 Duke team that was trending upwards losing to 7 South Carolina.

After the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, there is a lot to talk about going into the Sweet Sixteen. The heralded ACC, a conference which earned nine bids to the tournament, flopped, with only one team making it onto the Sweet Sixteen in UNC. The Big Ten, rather, who was supposedly experiencing an all around down-year, had three teams make it on: Purdue, Michigan and Wisconsin. This speaks to the level of competition people believed the Big Ten lacked; with so many evenly talented teams it is inevitable that each conference game is going to be a toss up. Another conference that has fared well is the SEC, including Kentucky. The SEC is 7-2 overall with some big wins including Florida with a 26-point win over a very good ACC team in Virginia. The Big 12 is showing well too, with an 8-3 record.

So far the NCAA Tournament has lived up to the hype, and fans can be sure they are in for a treat with the next few weeks of matchups.
