A letter to the editors: The crisis of ISIS: Ibrahim's perspective

Anwar Ibrahim, LHS student

I am a Muslim student who goes to Lincoln High School. With all the problems going on around the world and all the innocent people who are suffering every day I am deeply hurt and so disappointed about it. The groups, such as ISIS, are very bad. I myself, as a Muslim, know that every single day which passes by.

As a Muslim, the Quran says that if someone hurts someone else, like making him/her bleed, it’s like you killed the whole community. As a Muslim, there are rules you as a person have to follow. In Islam killing and hurting anyone is totally wrong; one has to be nice and not lie about anything.

Every religion in this whole world has some people who are bad and those who are good. The bad one will always continue to ruin the reputation for the other innocent people. Just like the extreme people who are members of ISIS are doing just that. What people see from YouTube and the news is ISIS killing people for not converting to Islam. This is wrong and not what the Quran teaches.

Every time ISIS kills some innocent people it deeply hurts the Muslims because that’s not what the Quran says and I don’t think that those people are Muslims. The word jihad is an Arabic word and it does not mean it’s a Muslim duty. A long time ago people used it when they were going to war or when they have some enemies which are coming towards them.

For me, ISIS is a very bad group. I feel the same way as the families who are crying for their lost ones. It’s really hurtful for innocent people who didn’t do anything, who have no idea about what is going on to be killed. It really hurts the Muslims too. I just wanted to share my perspective as a Muslim high school student in the U.S.
