As the end approaches for LHS seniors , the thought of summer looms overhead. For many college starts mid August cutting summer to a mere two months and a few days. This is thanks to the school date change.

    Getting out of school in June was not pleasing to most, and even less pleasing to this year’s graduating seniors. Cutting summer short is a big downside to the school date change, that many did not originally think about. The other students that are not graduating get to enjoy at least a few more weeks of summer. Seniors deserve just as much time for summer as any other student.

    This is the last summer before most seniors head off to college and that makes it an important one. Getting to spend time with family and friends before the seniors head off is crucial and due to the date change that is cut short. Most students chose to leave Sioux Falls for college and return home rarely. That is why summer is essential before starting a student’s new adventure.

    How can this problem be fixed? It can’t, unless the date is changed back. The school date starting after labor day is a fine idea, but it was not completely thought out. The many reason why many were of upset when the date was changed was the fact that  AP students would be losing an average of 10 days. No one said anything about the seniors losing time during summer, that in itself should have been a bigger deal.

  Summer will be shortened for most graduating seniors, and that is a fact that seniors will have to come to terms with. College is an important and exciting time for students and summer can’t put a damper on the excitement.
