The LHS A-Wing parking lot fills up quickly in the morning, requiring students to arrive extra early or park on the nearby streets.

‘Too many students and not enough parking spots’ should be LHS’ slogan. Parking lot drama is inevitable with roughly 2,000 students and not nearly enough space for them to park, but the LHS administration is doing nothing to solve these problems.

If a student is running late to class, it is very tempting to take one the many vacant

staff parking spots, because there are many. On any given day, multiple staff parking spots remain useless while dozens of students scramble to find spots even if they are 10 minutes early to school. There should be one parking spot for every teacher; there’s no reason for extra spots when LHS has a visitor parking lot.

Another problem with the parking lot size is the amount of parking lot passes distributed. The one pass per family is an inconvenient but understandable rule. Siblings involved in different school activities are forced to have different transportation to school. Even if a set of twins are seniors and take part in different extracurricular activities, one of the them must park by Arcadia or on the street which requires him or her to be extra early to school. One pass per family could result in a family feud because it is impossible to compromise.

The Arcadia parking lot is barely ever fully used. The freshmen and sophomores that don’t receive passes could be issued an Arcadia pass, only allowing them to park in the far away lot. Although the lot is still a little bit of a walk, at least it provides them a spot instead of parking all the way down the street by Arcadia. The passes could be less expensive, too.

The parking lot at LHS has many flaws that are hard to deal with because of the small size, but the administration has done little to actually improve it. Small steps toward more an expansion of parking should be taken.
