The Zika Virus; What to worry about
May 12, 2016
First there was the swine flu, then came Ebola, leading many to wonder “whats going to come next?” The Zika Virus is on the rise, but do South Dakotans have anything to worry about?
To date there have been no reports of the virus in SD, but does that mean we have nothing to worry about?
Symptoms to look for:
- Rash
- Joint pain
- Red eyes
- Headaches
Most people are not aware that they have contracted the virus due to the fact that symptoms don’t show. The virus can spread in various ways, most contract the virus from infected moustiques. One way the virus can be transmitted is through a mother contracting the virus while pregnant and is then passed on to the child. The virus can also be transferred via blood. People can contract the virus if they get a blood transfusion from a person with the virus.
To date there is no vaccination for the virus, but it can be prevented. How?
- Preventing mosquito bites
- Staying away from “affected areas”
- If you have any symptoms get check by a doctor immediately
- If the virus is contracted stay away from others who could contract the virus
The virus is commonly found in South America and Mexico. As the virus spreads upward, the US has little to worry about as long as we take the cautionary steps to prevent the virus from spreading. So take the correct steps to keep safe as mosquito season arrives.
