Ho-ho-hold on a minute

It is the day after Halloween. Kids are stuffing their faces with candy scored from the night before. Beautiful colored leaves are still falling from the trees and it is the first day of 24 hour Christmas music being on the radio. Halloween is over but it is still way, way too early for Christmas.

The buildup of Christmas starts as early as August for some stores. Hobby Lobby has their holiday decor up and ready to sell before school even starts. Christmas ads start appearing around the same time leaves start changing colors. Countdowns until Saint Nick’s arrival begin for kids all across the country. But why does the hype start so early?

I have always been against the way too early celebration of Christmas. I want to enjoy fall and the spookiness of Halloween. There is nothing I love more than fall weather and being completely awestruck by the beauty of the season. Thanksgiving, one of the most underrated holidays is more overseen because the next day is Black Friday. Instead of stuffing their face with food, everyone at the dinner table is reading the newspaper mapping out their every move to get deals in the consumer madness. All I want to do is slip into a food coma, watch football and not hear my family talk about where to camp out overnight.

Do not get me wrong, I love Christmas. Even though I will never admit it, I love decorating the tree with my family while watching “Elf,” but the hype can wait until after Thanksgiving if not longer. But unlike Glory, I do not believe Christmas should be celebrated before the snow hits the ground. I guess maybe the reason we have different beliefs is that seasons change faster when you get lost in a cornfield than anywhere else. I am not trying to hate on Glory or anyone else who enjoys Christmas. I only think that when the calendar turns to November, it is still too early for Christmas. Take some time to appreciate fall and Thanksgiving. You can wear your ugly holiday sweaters in a few more weeks.
