LHS volleyball falls to WHS in a tight match

This past Saturday at WHS the The LHS girls volleyball team took on their arch rival, the Washington Warriors. The Warriors came into the match up with a 2-1 lead on the Patriots for the current season. The Warriors were coming off a 3-2 win over the Brandon Valley Lynx, while LHS was fresh off its impressive 3-0 win over No. 1 ranked Harrisburg.

The Warriors, lead by a senior heavy team, started off strong, dealing LHS an early deficit. However, LHS, lead by seniors Anna Boyens, Maddi Barness and Anezka Szabo managed to crawl back and tighten the gap. The first set ended in a close score of 25-23, putting Washington up a set. LHS was able to come away with the second set 28-26 after impressive play by Szabo and Barness at the net and Boyens and Allison Engel in the back court.

The match continued with WHS winning the third set by a score of 25-16. LHS struggled to get anything going, but after a few key timeouts and some pep talk the LHS girls managed to control the fourth set and won by a tight score of 25-23. It all came down to the last set. WHS started strong, establishing a lead, and LHS was never able to overcome the hole they had dug. The final set ended with a score of 15-11, putting WHS on top.

Notable LHS underclassmen who contributed to the team’s strong effort include Somer Luitjens, Sydnaya Dunn, Lexi Herr and Caelyn Taylor. Additional support was given by seniors Tominee Sorenson and Angie Lee. LHS’s next game is this Thursday vs. Watertown at their home court, and a win is essential to continue their state hopes. If the LHS girls can pull off a win against Watertown, then they could potentially face WHS deeper into the tournament and hopefully get their revenge.
