The jokes on you, Drake; His offensive comments about mental illness

Controversy has sprung because of the recent comments on Drake’s new song “Two Birds, One Stone” directed toward Kid Cudi. Fans of both are torn between each side.

Kid Cudi recently admitted himself into rehab because of a lifelong battle with anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are both disorders that impair a person’s judgement and actions. These are both serious diseases and are the underlying problems for many cases of suicides. But Drake did not take this into mind while writing the lyrics to his song, and went too far in his “diss” track about Cudi.

You were the Man on the Moon. Now you just go through your phases, a line in Drake’s song “Two Birds, One Stone.”

Drake is basically implying that someone suffering from mental health is just going through a phase. I know that Drake and other current Hip-Hop artists’ songs are full of disses and jokes, but when something this serious is made fun of, backlash should be expected and has the right to be.

Many fans have taken to Twitter for discussion about Drake’s harsh lyrics, some even saying that they no longer are fans of this Hip-Hop icon. I agree with the statement that Drake has gone too far. Mental illnesses like depression are often thought of as phases that teenagers go through. This is where people are completely wrong. Not only can mental illnesses like Bipolarism change a person’s personality completely, it can cause them to act destructively.

Although the perception of mental illnesses has improved since the years past, like when electrical shock therapies were used on patients, it still has yet to be thought of as a serious disease. Drake’s song lyrics are offensive, and mental illness should not be joked about.
