Club of the Week: Science National Honors Society
December 13, 2016
This week’s spotlight group is Science National Honors Society. The club includes around 50 members who devote themselves to the wonders of science during their meetings. In order to be a member, a certain grade average must be held. This grade requirement is a 3.5 GPA in science classes which is decided by the national SNHS organization. Members also must be a sophomore or above.
Within this club there are many opportunities to learn about scientific topics that go deeper than what is learned during science classes at LHS. While talking to James Jarovski the adviser of the club he explained that what they discuss allows students to reach a deeper knowledge of science through the meetings that are held.
“In Science National Honors Society our goal is to increase scientific knowledge in a way that in enjoyable and goes beyond the classroom,” said Jarovski.
In a typical meeting, students discuss upcoming events and what they will do next. The club also does activities every few meetings throughout the semester. For example, the club is creating Christmas tree ornaments out of borax crystals in the near future. They find many fun and rewarding projects to do in a way that helps each member to learn a new aspect. In addition to meetings that are held at LHS, members must also attend one Sanford lecture per semester. Within these lectures, speakers discuss topics that are related to science and they allow members to extend their knowledge which meets the overall goals of SNHS.
This club allows students that like science to learn about many interesting different areas that they normally would not get to experience. It is a great opportunity that should be taken advantage of. If you enjoy science, contact Jarovski to apply and become a member of SNHS!
