Club of the week: Chess Club

Sidney Brower, Staff Writer

Chess Club is a newly organized club as of the 2016-2017 school year. This club is a place where students can come together and enjoy a mind engaging game. It was started and is partially run by Blake Hustrulid, the current president. He works with the supervisor Mr. Ferry and his friend Dylan Steinwand to create a great atmosphere for other chess infatuated students.

Clubs were started to bring people with common interests together in a pleasant environment. The added positive of Chess Club is not only for students to have fun, but to bring out their competitiveness. This club is one of few that will hold tournaments during their meetings. During these events, there is time for students who take chess more seriously to show off their skills and maybe even win.

“My favorite part about Chess Club is the competition,” said LHS student Blake Hustrulid. “It is always a great feeling to put someone into checkmate.”

Chess Club meetings are held regularly on Tuesdays in room A-106 right after school. Around 20 students gather together to engage in competitive games of chess. It is not a requirement to know how to play; the only criteria the club asks is to show up and enjoy! As a new club, they plan to continue growing and are always looking for new members to join.

“Everyone is welcome,” said Hustrulid. “There are plenty of people willing to teach you the basics if you show up.”

A club that is not only fun, but also competitive and interactive is something that cannot be missed out on. The LHS Chess Club offers all of this and hopes to see you at the next meeting.
Join the next Chess Club meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 3:30 p.m in room A-106.
