What to look for in colleges

Throughout the course of their junior and senior years, high schoolers tend to take multiple college visits. These visits are important because they are helpful in the decision of where to attend post high school education. When deciding on what college to attend, there should be multiple factors involved.

Rather than going just based off of name or ranking of the college, you should feel at home at the school, because someday it could be your home. Personally, I had already made my decision to attend Michigan State before I took my visit, but the tour I took was really reassuring. It helped me get an idea of the layout of the campus and facilities that I hadn’t been to before. Being comfortable on campus should be one of the most important factors in deciding where to go to college.

Facilities, such as sports complexes, housing, on-campus dining and lecture halls, should all help the college students attending. To some, a dorm is just a place to sleep and they don’t mind if it is small and bare, but to others it is very important to have the right place to live. To me, dorms and dining halls are significant because I want to be able to live comfortably in my dorm with my roommate, and the food has to be good because I will be eating a lot of it.

Finally, the size of the college is important. Some students are interested in a smaller college, with fewer than 5,000 students, but some want to be on a big campus. I have always wanted to go to a big school, so I was glad that Michigan State has a huge campus and 50,000 students to go with it. Big schools aren’t for everyone, so it is important that when high schoolers take visits to colleges. They do it during the school year when college students are on campus so they can see what student life is like and know if it is too overwhelming for them.

Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions anyone will make. It is a time to grow up and spread your wings, so everyone should make the most of it by choosing the school that is right for them. Whether it be big or small, out-of-state or in-state, the choice we make will follow us for our whole lives.
