Childhood heroes rebooted in the new ‘Power Rangers’
May 2, 2017
A very popular television series of 1990s was recently rebooted for the modern audience in the new “Power Rangers” movie. Following five “misfit” teenagers, they discover a spaceship which inside gives each of them superhero-like abilities. While the five were considered not ready and the last people who can save the world, the responsibility is put in their hands.
Angel Grove High School is not the ordinary school most are used to. Having one of the worst education environments, it serves as a place where troublemakers or lawbreakers are sent. Each of the five main characters, Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Zach and Billy have done something in their past to end up there. Against all odds, the five end up meeting as Jason and Billy are out in the mines. To their surprise, they all end up finding a spaceship and learning about their abilities.
With the majority of the cast having acted in huge productions like “The Hunger Games” and “Stranger Things,” it was a pleasant surprise to see a new face show up in the movie. Becky G (Trini Kwan) is a popular singer and songwriter that has music both in Spanish and English. Transferring over to the acting side of entertainment proved to be a success as she played her part fantastically as Trini. The actor that is most unrecognized and also could have performed better is Ludi Lin (Zach Taylor). With little emotion and delivery of his lines felt underwhelming to say the least.
The characters by far made this story what it is. With such a diverse cast and each coming from different backgrounds and struggles, there is bound to be someone relatable for everyone. With the fascinating premise of aliens and teenage superheroes that are also trying to live out their lives, it’s easy to get sucked into the story, wanting to know more. The only downside to all of this has to be the pacing of this movie. The beginning felt a little stretched out, while the ending very rushed. Calling it an action sci-fi movie is difficult as it gives off a contemporary feel until more than half way into the movie.
Theme wise this movie focuses on one major thing; no matter what one has done in the past, they can always redeem themselves and become the person they want to be. Each of the main characters were misfits and screw-ups, and yet they were the ones chosen to save the world.
“Power Rangers” is one of those movies that can appeal to a broad range of audiences. Anyone who enjoys superhero and sci-fi movies or has seen the original television series can easily enjoy this movie. With a PG-13 rating, it’s definitely worth the watch.
