Kevin Gates Ruins Soundset

Kevin Gates Ruins Soundset

Sydney Rosinsky, Social Media Coordinator/ Op Ed

This year, the lineup for Soundset features some of the best artists the Minnesota State Fairgrounds have seen. From Travis Scott, to Mac Miller to Lil Uzi, this festival is going to have it all. Every artist on the roster have confirmed their appearance… Except for one.

Louisiana born rapper Kevin Gates has once again been sentenced time in prison. This time for 30 months. This news was released April 27, and since Soundset is only a month away, he will unfortunately not be able to make an appearance this year.

His sentencing this time links back to his felony and arrest from 2013 and Gates has now pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Arrest warrants were out for Gates at least two times involving this case. Once in 2013 when he failed to show up for court and another in 2016, claims court records.

Gates has been in custody since the end of March, but the news of how long his sentence will be was released last week. Since he had been in custody, the judge granted him 34 days already taken off his 30 month sentence. Still, this is not enough for him to attend the festival which is less than a month away.

The news of Gates arrest could not have come at a worse time. If only he could have showed up for his court dates and served his time back in 2013, then maybe I would be able to see him perform “I Don’t Get Tired” on stage, but no. Thanks Kevin.
