LHS marching band performs at Bands of America
October 24, 2017
While most LHS students were enjoying their half day on Thursday by hanging out with friends and sleeping in on Friday morning, the other 16 percent of the student population was at the Bands of America competition in St. Louis, MO.
The marching band began their 13 hour journey to BOA on Thursday afternoon. Friday they practiced one last time and then at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday it was their time to shine in preliminaries.
Out of the 65 teams who performed in prelims, the LHS marching band got 10th place overall and second in the AAA class. This means they had the 10th highest amount of points overall and second highest amount of points in their class.
Points were awarded based on musical performance, individually and overall, visual performance, individually and overall, and general effects.
Being in the top 14 bands, based on points, the LHS marching band was placed into the finals.
This was the third time in LHS history the marching band made it to the finals. The first time was in 1985 and the second was in 2015 for “Gold Rush” where they got 13th place.
After the preliminary performance, the band performed again in the finals. Out of the 14 top bands, they placed 13th.
Although the marching band competition season has concluded, performances have not. They will be performing at a chicken dinner on Nov. 2 and 4 at 6 and 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets will be sold before those nights for $12 and then at the door for $13. Make sure to come check it out!

Thanks for a great story about a great group of talented band performers and their band directors. They are great representatives of Sioux Falls and South Dakota. So glad they were able to make it to the finals. Good job kids!!
