Killing two jerseys with one stone

Kobe Bryant, aka the “Black Mamba,” one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball, had his jersey retired last night. Throughout his 20 year career in the NBA, Bryant racked up many achievements including, five NBA championships, 17 NBA all-star selections and scoring an astonishing 81 points in one game.

Last April, Bryant decided it was time to hang up the shoes and retire from the NBA. His announcement was met with feelings of respect but also disappointment. Fans were not yet ready to say goodbye to one of the greatest players of all time. Bryant’s farewell game was nothing short of spectacular. At the age of 38, Bryant put up a show-stopping 60 points, finishing his career with a “W”.

Though Bryant’s playing career was finished, many knew this would not be the last time he would make headlines. Last night the Los Angeles Lakers, whom Bryant played his entire career for, retired both of his jerseys. Despite many great players switching numbers while in the NBA this is the first time a franchise has retired two jerseys for the same player. When Bryant first came into the league he repped number eight, a number he wore during his time in Italy. In 2006 the superstar switched to his high school number-24.

The switch in number did not affect Bryant’s game. He averaged about the same stats as he did before he made the change. Stats that will one day get him into the hall of fame.
