Afghan civilians are faced with more grief this week as a suicide bomber detonated an explosive in a crowded shopping area Saturday morning  just one week after 22 were killed in a luxury hotel bombing.

The bombing has killed at least 95 people and injured 158 others in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. Disguised as an ambulance, the attackers drove the van through a police checkpoint into a secure zone. The shopping center, known as Chicken Street, is home to a hospital and offices of the European Union. The center was crowded when the bomb went off at around 12:15 local time.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the act, the deadliest in months.

“I saw a huge flame,” a witness said in a BBC article. “The smoke was pungent. It entered my eyes and I was not able to see for some time. It was a terrible moment. [The area] is completely destroyed.”

President Trump called for “decisive action” against the group after the “despicable” bombing and the Afghan government condemned the bombing as a crime against humanity; accusing Pakistan of providing support according to a BBC article.

Pakistan denies this allegation. Pakistan has faced backlash this month as the US cut security aid to Pakistan due to its failure to try to stop terrorism within its own borders.

In October over 176 people were killed in attacks across Afghanistan in just one week. The country has struggled with mass civilian casualties due to the Taliban, a terrorist group that wants to bring the country back under their strict version of Islamic Law.
