Dear Oprah, please don´t
January 20, 2018
“That is an aha moment for me.¨ You may or may not have known that phrase to be one of many of the wonderful Queen and supposed future presidential candidate’s, Oprah Winfrey.
Last Saturday, Jan. 7, as I watched Oprah accept the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes, I couldn’t help but feel true amazement and practically gawking over the Queen in all her glory. Her speech as golden (as always), she spoke about the #MeToo movement, women’s rights and race. Her words were perfect, and the audience, and apparently everyone on Twitter was in love.
The next morning, in an effort to become a well-informed member of society, I scrolled through various news websites, when I came across an article (one of many, I might add) encouraging Oprah to run for president in 2020. My immediate thought was; sure, Oprah would make a great president! Wasn’t Ronald Reagan famous before he became president… and didn’t Trump have that reality TV show ¨The Apprentice¨ or something?
Wait a second, how qualified is Oprah really? I mean sure she can sweep you off your feet with a moving speech at an awards show, and she´s a successful businesswoman and media mogul, but what experience does she have, and what does she know about running a country? Oprah doesn’t have the years of experience that past presidents and presidential candidates have listed on their resumes. One might say that I came to a realization and had an ¨aha moment¨ myself.
Don´t get me wrong, Oprah is great and always will be. Oprah is among a small group of god-like stars that are so great, they are known exclusively by their first names (others include Beyonce, Cher, Bono, etc), so in my mind she can do no wrong. In a way, I pray that Oprah will consider a different career path, this reason being that I don’t want to lose what we already have.
Completely putting her qualifications aside, I just want Oprah to be the same person forever and always. Oprah is great at being Oprah, and as a result, I believe that we should shelter America’s sweetheart from the harsh realities of politics, like a mother does to her child. She is awesome at what she does; spreading joy and inspiration to all. Aha! Let’s keep it that way.
Oprah- P.S. don’t let me stop you girl, do yo thang, it you want to run for president, do it. I love you like you love bread. Xoxo -Lauren
