Starbucks is switching it up
January 18, 2018
Starbucks commonly introduces new drinks, some are limited time, a new addition or a “secret” menu item. Something different is nothing new to baristas and Starbucks customers alike, but this time the change is much more wide scale than swapping out for skim milk or sugar free syrup.
Starbucks introduced their new “blonde roast” on Tuesday, Jan. 9. According to their website, this blonde roast “marks the first time the company has introduced a new core espresso option in the U.S. in more than 40 years.” Their goal in creating the new roast is to provide a perfect blend for all their customers. The strong, rich flavor seekers can stick to traditional roasts, and those looking for a sweeter, smoother taste can branch out with the new product. Whether choosing a blonde or signature espresso roast, customers should be able to find something to suit their taste buds perfectly.
The debut has taken over all stores, including those in Sioux Falls. As soon as I entered the coffee shop, I saw posters, signs and window clings promoting the blonde roast trend. I decided to try the blonde roast in my signature drink, an iced caramel macchiato with light ice, and I had mixed feelings. I completely agree with the Starbucks blonde roast creators when they said it was supposed to be “smooth and bright.” The blonde roast definitely has less kick than the regular espresso, and much more of the carmely and milky taste is able to shine through.
Being a regular coffee drinker, I like the strong coffee taste to my drinks, so the blonde roast is not for me. Those who do find the regular too overpowering though, would love the blonde roast.
Although it might not be for me, I think the blonde roast was a bold move for Starbucks to make, and I think it’s paying off. I’ll be interested to try it in the future with drinks I’ve found too strong previously.
