LHS’s marching band has made some big strides this season. Placing 13th at the BOA super regionals and winning seemingly countless awards, but now they can add a  new victory to the list: a piece of South Dakota Legislature.

Over the long break, LHS’s own marching band was celebrated by the state government as they were recognized with a legislative commemoration in honor of their spectacular performance in the 2017 season.

“The commemoration is specifically regarding the accomplishments of the marching band throughout the 2017 season,” said assistant band director, Sam Anderson. “It is also a reflection on the band program as a whole.”

The process began when members of the band parent association petitioned and explained all the accomplishments the band had made over the year, and on Wednesday, Feb. 21, senate commemoration no. 39 was officially approved and presented to members of the band.

Students in the band were welcomed to travel up to Pierre where the commemoration was being officially signed. Many of the 244 member band joined in on the trip, taking in on fun activities like touring the state capitol, meeting some of the legislators and even playing the national anthem on both the senate and house floors.

“[the legislators] were really receptive, really appreciative, and really represented us well,” said Anderson.

Students enjoyed the experience seeing government at work, and were thankful for the senators that honored the band and their hard work through the 2017 season.

Congrats to the LHS band on their season and this commemoration!
