Greatest team in SD history
May 31, 2018
For years and years, LHS has been victorious both athletically and academically. Adding to the resume: The greatest boys track team of all-time.
This past weekend, the LHS boys track team brought home the hardware, not only winning the state title, but setting records and becoming the best team ever in the state of SD, combining for 174 total points. The guys showed absolute domination, beating the next closest team, Rapid City Central, by almost 100 points. Led by the fastest 4×1 team in SD history of Jack Meyers, Malik Redd, David Bizimana and Collin Brison, the boys were solid all around. Victories in the 4×1, 4×2, high jump, 4×8, 3200 and placements in every other event led them to the victory.
With RC Central right on their tail in the 4×1, the four seniors were not only the fastest LHS has seen, but the state has ever seen. Both LHS and RC Central beat the previous record, and gave the crowd one of the most competitive races in SD history.
“Going into the meet, the team was just focused on winning,” said senior Meyers. “We all just wanted to go out and do our best and bring home the state title for LHS.”
With the Mamba mentality and work ethic from team members across LHS, they were sure to be victorious. For the last few months, the boys and girls representing LHS on the track team came after school every day to work on their craft. Practice started at 3:30 p.m., as well as optional lifting afterwards. Without the dedication from each and every one of the individuals, the outcome could have been different, but the team continued to prosper throughout the season and show why they were so highly ranked in the beginning of the season.
“It is always a fun time to see our team’s hard work get put into play during the meets,” said Meyers. “The grind really is all worth it in the end, especially when the outcome is what it was. It is very satisfying knowing that we were collectively able to pull it out and give LHS what it deserves.”
At the end of the day, all the hard work and hours spent at track practice payed off. The victorious LHS track team secured the State title, bringing the trophy home for the third straight year.
