At long last, psychedelic rock/pop group Tame Impala has given the world a quick glimpse into the work they have been creating since their last album release in 2015.

Tame Impala fans have waited tirelessly since the 2015 release of “Currents,” an album that put the band in the spotlight across the music industry. Later in 2017, the band surprised everybody with “Currents B-Sides & Remixes,” a short EP with two remixes and three new tracks. Since then, band leader, Kevin Parker, has produced music with many artists and has been apart of numerous collaborations, but no new music was set to come out anytime soon. Thankfully, the long wait came to an end when the band announced on Instagram that a new track would be dropping on March 21.

The song is titled “Patience” and it is everything that one would hope a Tame Impala track to be, yet it still sounds fresh and original. The song opens with a dense piano line and soothing strings that lay the foundation for the track. Soon after, a heavy drum beat accompanied by congas helps solidify a groovy, disco-like sound, adding a new type of sound to the band’s repertoire. Parker’s vocals soar over the instruments in his first lines, creating a beautiful opening to a fantastic song. Light fluffy synth sounds later accompany Parker as the song progresses into its chorus and its catchy and ambient post-chorus.

The song is wonderful, without a doubt. It takes listeners on a relaxing musical journey and gives old fans new material to obsess over until the band decides to release a new song.

Some have expressed concern with the new song due to the fact that the band did not return to their “older sound,” which featured heavy distorted and phasered guitars and a plethora of synths with different effects. These distinct sounds were incredibly relevant in the band’s first two albums, “Innerspeaker” and “Lonerism,” but Parker’s songwriting turned more towards pop music with “Currents.” Although not everybody enjoyed the band’s slight change in sound, I personally think that both “Currents” and “Patience” are amazing pieces of art and reflect the band’s vibe perfectly. And who knows, their next album could feature some songs that reflect the earlier days, but either way I think that most Impala fans are excited to see what the future holds.
