Apology for “A letter to the guy who ate the bat”
April 14, 2020
On behalf of the Lincoln High School Statesman, we apologize for our recent “A letter to the guy who ate the bat” article. The article contained offensive views about Asian and African cultures and did not reflect the views of the Statesman as a whole. As a newspaper, our goal with Perspectives is to publish quality writing that contains accurate evidence regarding the topics that it covers. We understand that “A letter to the guy who ate the bat” did not uphold our standards and have taken it down. We thank you for your feedback on the article.
Sincerely,
The Statesman editors

Ah yes, Coronavirus is the fault of extremely poor Asian citizens and not the government officials that actively allow and perpetuate the spread of it. Also, as someone else said, this is a really ignorant and racist article. Disappointing to see it coming from the Statesman.

I genuinely hope you can remove your anti-Western mindset before you write another article. Thanks,

Okay, I’m sorry. I know I already posted, but this has been on my mind since I left a comment. How can you say things like “In China and other Asian countries the consumption of weird foods is very common. They eat cats, dogs, bats and plenty of other animals that most people would never even think of consuming.” You’re creating an us vs them mentality. Chinese people (and all people!) are regular people. They may have a different culture, but you are essentially pinning the entire experience of Chinese people (and Asian people, since you’re so eager to group them as one entity) as if they are one person. You’re promoting a harmful Asian stereotype, and this is absolutely horrible. Please take this article down. Again, I know you didn’t mean harm, but sometimes you may not realize that your words could be hurtful.

To add to that, I know you didn’t mean any harm, but still. I think maybe you should review what you all post more.

Isn’t this sort of racist? Well, not sort of, but legitimately racist. Not sure about the content you guys are posting.

Thanks for your comments. This is a story by one of our staff members and their opinion, not the opinion of all staff. We appreciate your feedback.
