Election Day, 2020. It’s cold outside, with the wind howling like a pack of ravenous canines. Indoors, you turn on the news and gasp, shocked at the results on your screen. You think to yourself, this nation will never be the same.

Regardless of personal political preferences or next Tuesday’s electoral outcome, millions will surely feel that way, in the culminating exercise of what is sure to be one of the most polarizing American elections in history. How did we get here, and how does that explain both where we are now and what might happen come Tuesday?
