Another Cinderella story
March 31, 2021
Almost every year March Madness has a Cinderella story, and this year it is Oral Roberts University.
After defeating North Dakota State in the Summit League championship, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles earned an automatic bid into the March Madness tournament. The Golden Eagles were put into the south region as a 15 seed and were set to face off against the number 2 seeded Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes were coming off a second-place finish in the Big-10 tournament and seemed destined to make a big-time run in March Madness. However, the Golden Eagles had different plans. Led by the high-scoring duo of star point guard Max Abmas and forward Kevin Obanor, the Golden Eagles were able to pull off the huge upset against the Buckeyes, winning by a score of 75-72 in overtime. The duo combined for 59 of those points and were able to lead the Golden Eagles to their first tournament win since 1974 and become just the ninth 15 seed to ever upset a number 2 seed.
Two days after their shocking upset, the Golden Eagles were set to face off against the 7th seeded Florida Gators. The Golden Eagles were down for most of this game and trailed by five points at halftime. The Gators continued to knock down shots and were able to extend their lead to double digits. However, the Golden Eagles refused to go away and were able to erase an 11-point, second-half deficit to come back and defeat the Gators by a score of 81-78. Once again the duo of Max Abmas and Kevin Obanor proved to be too much as the two combined for 54 points and were both able to play all 40 minutes.
After defeating the Florida Gators, Oral Roberts will advance to the sweet 16 and join Florida Gulf Coast University as the only 15 seeds to ever reach the sweet 16. The Golden Eagles will face off against the number 3 seeded Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, March 27. These teams faced off earlier in the year and Arkansas won by a score of 87-76, the Razorbacks were able to hold Max Abmas to only 11 points on 4/11 shooting.
The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles have won the hearts of millions around the world and will look to continue their Cinderella run this weekend against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
