This past weekend was the first normal college football Saturday since the 2019 season. It featured many different ranked matchups and surprising upsets.

A highly anticipated matchup was between the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and the 13th ranked Miami Hurricanes. The Crimson Tide came into this game with lots of questions and pressure surrounding themselves. After losing almost all of their starters from the previous year, many predicted they would take a step back this year and could possibly lose week one. However, on Saturday the defending champions showed exactly why they deserve to be ranked No. 1 after they defeated the Miami Hurricanes by a score of 44-13 in a one-sided affair. The biggest takeaway from this game is the performance of Alabama’s freshman quarterback, Bryce Young. Young is a former 5-star recruit coming out of high school and absolutely dominated in his college football debut. Throwing for over 340 yards and four touchdowns, Young showed off accuracy and decision making skills in the impressive victory. If able to stay consistent playing at a high level, he could become the first true freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy.

Every college football season there are plenty of upsets that occur. Either a ranked opponent loses at home or a top 10 team loses on the road. However, very rarely do we see an FCS team defeat a ranked FBS opponent, which is exactly what happened this weekend after the Montana Grizzlies defeated the no. 20 ranked Washington Huskies by a score of 13-7.  What makes this win even more satisfying is that according to 406mtsports, Mont. was paid $675,000 by Washington to play them. Many FBS teams will pay small FCS schools to play them because they usually receive an easy win, while the FCS schools receive money in return to improve their programs. This game will go down as one of the greatest college football upsets of all time and will forever change the Montana football organization.

This college football season is already off to an incredible start. Fans witnessed one of the greatest upsets of all time and saw how dominant Alabama is. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season turns out.
