After a slow spell in the theater community due to COVID-19, musicals are finally back in full swing in Sioux Falls. Here are some fantastic productions to look forward to in the upcoming months:

       1. “Peter and the Starcatcher”

The Dakota Academy of Performing Arts will be presenting a musical perfect for the whole family on the weekend of Nov. 12-14, 2021 at the Orpheum Theater. “Peter and the Starcatcher,” based on best-selling novels, tells the familiar story of how an orphan grows up to be Peter Pan. The lively musical showcases local talent as the 16 performers act out more than 100 characters.

       2. “A Christmas Carol”

Just in time for the holiday season, The Premiere Playhouse will be presenting “A Christmas Carol” on select days from Dec. 2, 2021 to Dec. 12, 2021 at either 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater. The infamous play tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy man who does not quite possess the Christmas spirit. Audiences will melt as Scrooge is visited by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future who convince him to change his attitude.

       3. “White Christmas”

Through Dec. 16-19, 2021, Dakota Academy of Performing Arts will be putting on their version of “White Christmas.” The musical will premiere at the Orpheum Theater and is based on the timeless film featuring World War II veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis. The heartwarming story shows two men following a set of singing sisters to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge owned by their former army commander.

       4. “Fiddler on the Roof”

This beloved fan-favorite musical will be shown at the Washington Pavillion on Feb. 4-6, 2022 at various times. This uplifting story involving family, faith and traditions will be told in a fresh new way; however, the performance will be based on the original staging by Jerome Robbins.

       5. “Potted Potter”

From Feb. 18-20, 2022 “Harry Potter” fanatics will be able to watch “Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience,” which is a Critic’s Pick by the New York Times, New York Magazine and Time Out London. The parody combines all seven books of the “Harry Potter” series into 70 hilarious minutes. This fast-paced and interactive musical showing at the Orpheum Theater makes it perfect for a family outing.

      6. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

For only two days, Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” will be coming to Sioux Falls at the Washington Pavillion On March 4, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. and March 5, 2022 at 1 and 6 p.m. fans will get the chance to revisit their childhood with the story of Willy Wonka opening his amazing yet mysterious chocolate factory to only a few lucky children. The lively play will include fantastic songs, choreography and everyone’s favorite characters.
