We have all had those post-workout cravings that just will not go away. Whether you are craving a sweet treat or salty snack, here are a few healthy and delicious snacks for after a workout.

First, the most obvious: a protein shake. Protein shakes will help your tired muscles recover and rebuild faster. It is best to drink a protein shake within 30 minutes of working out for the best results. It is a delicious drink that you can wind down and relax with or take on the go. I’d say if you have a craving for ice cream, this is the perfect option. This cold, tasty treat also comes in many different flavors. One of my favorite ways to have a protein shake after a workout is in a smoothie bowl. It is easy and tastes like dessert. Just blend up the protein shake with a couple spoonfuls of yogurt and about a cup of milk, add your favorite toppings (mine are bananas, granola, chia seeds and peanut butter) and enjoy.

Another great option for snacking is eggs and toast. Especially after a morning workout, scrambling or frying up some eggs and popping one or two pieces of bread in the toaster is easy and delicious. Eggs are a great source of protein to repair your tired muscles and bread is filled with carbs to help you regain energy. So sit back, relax and enjoy your post-workout breakfast. It will leave you feeling accomplished and energized for the rest of your day.

One of my personal favorite post-workout snacks is a variation of peanut butter and jelly toast. Pop a piece of (whole grain) bread in the toaster and grab some strawberries, blueberries or any fruit of your choice. While the bread is toasting, wash and chop up the fruit. When the toast pops up, spread some almond butter on it, drizzle some honey and place your fruit on top. Lastly, sprinkle some granola and chia seeds on top and enjoy. This variation of peanut butter and jelly toast is a great source of carbs that will fill you up and help you regain energy for the day.

Another one of my go-to post-workout snacks is a yogurt parfait. Yogurt is high in protein and the toppings are filled with carbs which will keep you energized for the day while recovering your muscles. Some topping ideas for yogurt are any type of fruit (ex: berries, bananas, etc.), yogurt, chia seeds, honey and many more. This is a light, healthy and energizing way to start the day.

Whichever delicious snack you choose, they will all help your muscles recover and supply you with energy for any other plans you may have. Eating a healthy snack after your workout is a game-changer and will leave you feeling accomplished, healthy and prepared for the day.
