Struggling with change
February 3, 2022
Change can be a scary thing for many people. The daunting thought of putting yourself into new situations with new routines can be unpleasurable to think about. Especially in a time when a new semester is in full swing, the fears of change can be debilitating. However, by realizing resistance to change is holding one back, one can make necessary changes to take a step into the unknown and embrace the change.
I am someone that thrives off of a routine: getting up at the same time every day, eating usually the same thing for breakfast, just going through the motions of my everyday school life. To some people, the thought of no variation in their daily routine is almost as bad as me being hurled into the unexpected.
It’s not the fact that I am not open to change and variance in my routine but the fact that the routine I complete every day gives me that sense of security I so desperately long for. In a world where things can change in an instant, the time I wake up and the routine I check off on the imaginary list in my head is something I can control and depend on.
However, change can be a good thing because it allows for new experiences and people to come into your life unexpectedly. It’s a necessary part of life, and while the agony of anticipating what is to come next can be daunting, it is important to look back and see how much good change has brought into one’s life. All of the new passions, friends and ideas that have been inspired by change.
Now is the perfect time to embrace the change surrounding us. With a new semester filled with new teachers, students and experiences it is easy to fall into the trap of avoiding the unknown. But, by realizing change is an unavoidable aspect of life and that it can lead to unimaginable outcomes, it is important to let go of the fear of being out of control and let life take you where you’re supposed to go.
