Buy this, not that: Costco edition

Kate Tollinger, News Editor

When shopping down the Costco aisles, there are a surplus of products to buy. Many different foods are made by different brands with different ingredients. The question on what to buy often roams one’s mind. Here are six basic foods that Americans consume almost daily, which one to buy and why.

Chicken

It may be easier to grab the already cooked Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken, but an Organic Chicken is the way to go. The rotisserie chicken is injected with a large amount of salt; these chickens are also raised in confined areas and are not quality fead. An organic chicken is a much healthier option.

Peanut Butter

A very common peanut butter brand is JIF, but Costco offers an organic peanut butter with only two ingredients. JIF peanut butter contains added sugar and oil, whereas the Kirkland Brand is made up of only two ingredients: peanuts and salt. This peanut butter has a way different texture than JIF peanut butter but the flavor is of much better quality.

Brownie Mix

The Ghirardelli brownie mix is a very popular seller but another option for brownie mix at Costco is Miss Jones Keto and Paleo mix. This mix has zero added sugar, is grain free and is keto and paleo friendly. With a slightly different texture, these brownies are a healthier alternative to the regular brownie mix.

Pancakes

When looking for a quick easy breakfast, pancake mix is the way to go. Costco sells Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix, but a better option would be Kodiak Cakes mix. This mix has fewer ingredients, less added sugar and higher protein.

Mayonnaise

The obsession with avocados has been on the upward spiral and Costco incorporates this trend through offering Primal Kitchen’s Mayo as a healthier alternative to the more common Hellmann’s mayonnaise. It is made with avocado oil and is sugar free. The texture of the two are almost identical and the taste of Primal Kitchen’s Mayo is still solid.

Oil

There are several types of cooking oils to buy. Vegetable oil and canola oil are some of the most used, but an alternative sold at Costco is avocado oil. Avocado oil is made from 100% avocados and is a great alternative compared to other higher processed cooking oils.
