Going to a Snoop Dogg concert from someone who does not love rap

Last Tuesday I attended the Snoop Dogg concert at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. From a non-frequent concert goer and an even less frequent rap listener, here are my thoughts.

The concert started at 7:30 p.m. with four mediocre opening acts. All four of the acts consisted of guys who appeared to be touring for the first time as they consistently made very misogynistic comments about the women in the pit. With this as the start of our evening, I was not necessarily loving the concert, but as soon as Snoop walked on the stage a little after 10 p.m.,  the energy changed completely. Considering this was a marijuana themed concert, some high school students might assume that they would not have an enjoyable time because they cannot partake in the activities that a majority of the audience is engaging in. Despite the strong aroma of marijuana in the air, my mom and I can still get down to a Snoop Dogg song while ignoring the amount of smoke around us. In fact, at one point in the concert, Snoop Dogg asked the audience to lift up their lighters, similar to what you see at a normal concert of the audience lighting up the crowd with flashlights, lighter flames filled the air. This leads me to believe I might have been the only sober person in the entire audience.

With Snoop Dogg and his audience having the best energy throughout this experience, it was an easy time for a non-rap lover like myself to have an enjoyable time. Not only did he play songs that I knew and loved, but also played new songs that created a love for his type of music. Snoop Dogg sang classics like “Jump Around,” “Gin and Juice,” “P.I.M.P.” and “Young, Wild & Free” which were easy to dance around to, complete with amazing lights and fun backup dancers. He also surprisingly kept up the energy while paying tribute to artists like 2Pac, Nate Dogg and The Notorious B.I.G. To add even more spirit to the concert, behind Snoop Dogg was a screen showing Snoop up close in different colors, and even though the filter over the screen was messed up due to the amount of smoke on stage, the visuals still turned out interesting. Overall, with the very welcoming and chill environment created at the Snoop Dogg concert from both the audience and Snoop himself, I would give the concert a 10/10.
