Daisy Larson, Staff Writer

When was the last time you visited one of the Sioux Falls’ public libraries? Most people may not even be aware that we have 13 FREE city-wide libraries that are open to the public every day of the year. Not only do these libraries house books, ranging from ages zero to 100, they also host many activities for the whole family.

I recently visited the downtown public library in search of a book that wasn’t available at the school library. On my trip, the first and only feeling I had felt when I walked inside was a feeling of safety and comfort. Everywhere I looked, there were staff that greeted me with a smile and never hesitated to ask if I needed help. There were kids playing on the computers and teenagers sitting at the tables and studying. It was quiet but not too quiet- a perfect atmosphere for doing homework. The last time I visited a public library was around a younger age. Until now, it was a place that had never crossed my mind. Libraries are often overlooked due to the heavy dependence on technology this world has formed, and I must say that I fell for this belief. One thing I will tell you though is that libraries are still open and are still indeed needed. All you have to do is one thing: create a membership with the public libraries at no charge, check out a book and discover the endless possibilities that books can offer. Just because the school year is coming to a close does not mean the fun is over. Visit a public library near you and you may just find a book (or place) to fall in love with!
