Every year, during the first full week of May, we celebrate what some would say are the foundation of our society, teachers. The people who spend their days guiding, educating and some of the time, parenting. Without teachers, how would we produce a nation of smart and capable adults? The true answer is that it would be impossible. Not only would we lack the ability to do simple math, but without teachers, we would not have a lot of the skills that are essential for daily life. As school begins around five or six years old, this time of learning is crucial for not only beginning the stages of addition and subtraction but also beginning to understand social skills and how to be a friend. All of our beginnings start with teachers. So, where would we be without them? Without them helping us fill out college applications and write recommendations. Without them always having a snack just in case you forgot breakfast or lunch. Without them to instill some responsibility during the times you just want to give up. Where would you be without all of the teachers who have had your back throughout your 12 years of school?

During this week, take some time to thank your teachers. Here are some of the best ways you can do it:

Write them a card

This may seem too cheap or overdone, but do not underestimate the power of words. Make this personal. Show you care. By writing to some of your favorite teachers, you can explain impactful moments, happy memories or even times you appreciated they were a little hard on you. These things show effort and appreciation, things we get from teachers on a daily basis.

Listen

It is common for teenagers to believe school is such a burden on them and the daily schedule can become dull and boring. Now think about how your teachers feel. Hours a day, showing up before school and leaving long after we are gone, teachers work with hundreds of kids on that same daily dull and boring schedule. Yet, they show up for us. They lesson plan for us. They prepare for us. Because our success is their number one priority. So take some time to listen to your teachers. Make it easier on them. Show up and respect the lesson plan, respect their preparation and listen.

Give them a break

Before class when you are yawning at 7:30 a.m. in the Starbucks drive through, take a second and think about your teachers. I’ve never met a teacher who didn’t thoroughly enjoy a good cup of coffee to start their hectic day. So, why not bring your teacher a special treat to truly start their day off right. It’s the little things.
