Meet me at ‘Midnights’
October 28, 2022
Many have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Taylor Swift’s newest album, “Midnights,” and now it is finally here. The main album consists of 13 songs and a message from Swift of course. As an added surprise, there is a secondary album called “3am edition,” which includes seven extra songs.
“Anti-Hero:”
The most popular song off of “Midnights” is “Anti-Hero”. This song is about Swift avoiding her own problems and instead enduring everything else, as seen in the lyric “I’ll stare directly at the sun / But never in the mirror / It must be exhausting rooting for the anti-hero.” Swift also released a music video with this song, in which she is running around a home of her nightmares. There are ghosts and her “future children” are arguing over her will.
“Snow on the Beach:”
Many people were most excited about her collaboration with Lana Del Rey just to be disappointed when they discovered Del Rey is barely a part of the song. Despite this disappointment, “Snow on the Beach” is a great song, and one of the few happy ones on the album. Swift sings about how it feels to fall in love, calling the experience “weird but beautiful.”
“Lavender Haze:”
This is my personal favorite song on the album because of the eerie, surreal background music of the song. This song is supposedly about Joe Alwyn, Swift’s boyfriend. She says “All they keep asking me/ Is if I’m gonna be your bride/ The only kinda girl they see/ Is a one night or a wife,” referencing her distaste for constant questions and rumors regarding engagement and marriage.
“Maroon:”
Swift loves to name her songs after colors, if that was not obvious. Examples include “Red,” and “Lavender Haze.” “Maroon,” is about a failed, short-lived romance. This song is engrossing because when she sings the word maroon, it sounds like an echo.
“Vigilante Shit:”
This song is an ode to “Reputation,” and similar to “no body, no crime,” a song from her ninth album “evermore.” “no body, no crime,” tells a story of getting revenge on a man for a friend. Similarly, this song has a deep bass and a hot-girl theme. Swift’s superfans, also known as Swifties, are patiently awaiting the drop of the music video of this song to confirm their conspiracies about the song.
Overall, This new Album is a hit and I give it five stars. Swift really crushed it and I love that she is back to singing upbeat pop songs. Other honorable mentions in this album are “Midnight rain,” “Mastermind,” “Bejeweled,” “Question…?,” and “Karma.”
