After running for 118 years, LHS students have taken an interest in employment at Sioux Falls’s Minnehaha Country Club.
The country club consists of an 18-hole golf course, a complete driving range, an indoor golf simulator, luxurious lunch and dinner, patio dining, tennis courts and an art master exhibit. There are many full and part-time options available for year-round and seasonal work. The club provides a job for students in the summer when they are not conflicted with school. But, they also provide different opportunities for students to work during the school year as well.
Specifically, one sophomore, six juniors and many now-graduated students from LHS are filling these positions during the summer. LHS junior, Jackson Vucerevich, connected with the job from another LHS student, Griffin Keller. He currently has the position of a Food Expo but plans to be a lifeguard next summer.
“I enjoyed just being around all of my friends and the lifeguards and going in the pool,” said Vucerevich.
Having a job provides multiple advantages. Working at the country club gave the workers some experience and guidance for future possible positions. A job provides a paycheck, something to do, new experiences and in this case, a free pool pass. One major advantage for many workers was the ability to use the pool without having a membership. After, or even during some shifts employees could take a swim on a hot day. The employees also appreciated being able to spend time outside during the summer while on the clock.
For a good job, a healthy work environment is needed. Porter Stangeland, another LHS junior, appreciates this part of working at the country club. Stangeland will be returning next summer to work his third year as a server at the club.
“I am a server: I usually walk around, talk to the members and take their orders while making small conversation,” said Stangeland.
Although he was not always seen taking orders; Stangeland often spent much of his time messing around with his co-workers. Jackson Vucerevich remembers a specific time when he got strapped onto a stretcher and dipped into the pool by his co-workers. This job created many new friendships and memories between students here at LHS and other schools.
“There were a lot of good laughs, and although I didn’t want to go to work every day, it made it better with the good memories we made,” said Vucerevich.
Working is not always enjoyable but for these LHS students, the Minnehaha Country Club supplied them with a perfect summer job.
