A lot can happen in a year. 2023 was filled with many memorable events, including the missing submarine, Barbenheimer and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. In honor of the new year, these are a handful of the biggest events to look forward to in 2024.
February:
- Sunday, Feb. 11: The Super Bowl LVIII (58) will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada with Usher performing at the halftime show.
- Thursday, Feb. 29: 2024 is a leap year, which occurs every four years. The Earth completes a full revolution around the Sun every 365.2422 days, so every fourth year an extra day is added in order for the calendar to stay in sync with the seasons.
April:
- Monday, Apr. 8: A total solar eclipse will cross over North America. According to NASA, “A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun.” The last total solar eclipse occurred on Aug. 21, 2017 and the next one is not until Aug. 23, 2044, so you will not want to miss this.
May:
- Sunday, May 19: Graduation day for seniors in the Sioux Falls School District, which is a big day filled with mixed emotions.
July:
- Friday, July 26: The 2024 Summer Olympics, hosted in Paris, France, will begin. Skateboarding, surfing, breaking (a style of dance) and sport climbing will be added to the games this year.
August:
- Wednesday, Aug. 28: The 2024 Paralympics, also hosted in Paris, France, will begin.
November:
- Tuesday, Nov. 5: The U.S. presidential election will take place. The front-runner favorites include current Democratic President Joe Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump.
- Thursday, Nov. 28: The LHS marching band will perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
- The Artemis II mission will occur sometime in November 2024. In this eight-day mission, three NASA astronauts and a Canadian Space Agency astronaut will be sent around the moon for the first time since 1972. Artemis II will help prepare NASA for their moon landing mission in 2025. Visit NASA’s website to learn more about the mission and crew.
