Finding a perfect gift for mothers has always been a common struggle for kids. You cannot always give your mom a robe, chocolates or jewelry for every holiday. To solve this problem, I received the perspective of some LHS teachers to see what they would like for Mother’s Day.
Starting off, Amy Eckart believes that the best Mother’s Day gift is simply being left alone. As a mother and a teacher, her days are full of chaos and she does not always get alone time. “As bad as it sounds,” said Eckart, she just hopes to not be constantly asked what is for dinner, and other mothers would agree. The perfect gift for Eckart on Mother’s Day would be to spend the day to herself.
Machelle Koch thinks that the best Mother’s Day gifts are sentimental items from her kids and grandkids that she can keep forever. Family pictures and handmade crafts are her favorite gifts to receive. She loves getting paintings, hand prints and drawings from her grandkids. Not only would Koch appreciate receiving sentimental items, but she would also appreciate massages and other self-care items.
Dr. Kroeze also agrees that sentimental items are the perfect gifts to receive for Mother’s Day. She especially likes when her kids make her Legos. Kroeze has multiple flower Legos that her daughter built, sitting on a desk in her classroom. These items allow her to always remember her children, which she adores.
Anything that lets Emily McConkey spend time with her daughter, she cherishes. As a mom with only one child, she always wants to focus her time on her daughter. She loves the creative gifts that her daughter makes herself. McConkey’s favorite gift she has received as a mom is a t-shirt with an Aslan quote on it from her favorite book series, “Narnia.”
To further help with potential gifts, I came up with some ideas that moms would appreciate:
- A hand-made blanket- After hearing the opinions of some of the LHS staff, I figured a personally made blanket would be the perfect gift. Moms love the idea of you putting in the time and effort to make something for them. Making blankets can be quite easy no matter your crafting skills. You could either easily make a tie blanket with affordable fabric from Walmart or Joann’s with your mother’s favorite colors and print, or use loop yarn as well. There are many possibilities. Blankets provide comfort, and knowing the blanket was made just for them might make their day.
- Make them dinner- Although this cannot be classified as a gift, most moms enjoy it when their kids take the time to make them a meal. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, it still holds a valuable importance to mothers. As Eckart explained, after a week of work and taking care of kids, it is nice to have a break. Making a meal for them can mean a lot more than just food.
- A photo album- Sentimental items seem to be a trend amongst the most wanted gifts for Mother’s Day, and pictures fit right in. Pictures hold memories and will always be available for moms to look at. You can buy a photo album and fill it with some of your favorite memories for very cheap. Even adding the date or small notes underneath the pictures can add huge sentimental value. As students get closer to graduating through high school, these pictures will be perfect for moms to look back on when they are growing up.
- A comfort basket- Lastly, a simple but thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day would be a basket of her favorite items. This could include blankets, candy/snacks, candles, self-care items, beauty products, cups/water bottles, the list could go on. Anything that your mom enjoys, you can include. Adding a letter or a handwritten card would also add great value. A simple gift like this shows mothers that you love and care about them, the best gift a mother could receive
Hopefully, after reading this, you have a better idea of what to get your mom on Mother’s Day. After all, they have spent their whole lives taking care of you, and it’s time to return the love.
