As Thanksgiving approaches, we turn to thank those whom we are grateful for. Most like to thank their family, friends or teachers, but for LHS senior Ella Rima, this season holds great significance as she appreciates her mom for all of her single mother care.
Growing up, Rima always lived with her mom. They spent their time together playing softball, as she coached Rima’s team. They attended many concerts, like Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato. One of her favorite activities was the shopping trips. No matter their location, they could always find somewhere to go shopping. All of these bonding experiences have created a trusting and everlasting relationship between them. Although she did not wish to have separated parents, she believes that if it was not for the separation, they would not be as close as they are now.
They have grown together, experienced hardships together and learned together. Her mother has passed on lessons, tips and stories all of which have helped Rima navigate through her young adulthood. She has shown her that even while experiencing hardships, being compassionate and strong is important to accomplishing goals. Her support has established a system of empathy, kindness and courage in Rima’s life.
During the holidays, they always spend extra time together, whether it is going to the movies, small vacations or simply going out to eat.
“Being a single parent during the holiday season can be hard, but she makes it look easy,” said Rima. Although the two tend to spoil each other, they use gifts to show their respect toward one another. Over Christmas and her birthday, she always receives the best picked gifts.
“She never falls a foot short on making sure that she gets me everything plus more that I asked for,” said Rima.
Rima admires her mom’s ability to balance being a parent, friend and her work life all at once. Rima’s mom works as an orthopedic nurse, so her schedule is busy. Some Friday mornings, when Rima wakes up and her mom has already left for work, she leaves her a small note and cash to start her day with some coffee.
All of these little gestures, memories and gifts have added up to mean a lot more to Rima and her mom. They are each other’s family, something they will have forever. Together they hold special values of honesty, communication and appreciation that will follow them throughout their lives.
A strong connection between mothers and daughters is not always found, and a connection this strong is rare. It is easy to take for granted the everyday sacrifices that parents make, especially single parents.
As everyone gathers with loved ones to give thanks, also take a moment to extend gratitude to those who love at all times, regardless of how difficult it may be.
