The Lunchly ready-to-eat meal line, launched by high-profile influencers Logan Paul, KSI (Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji) and MrBeast (James Stephen “Jimmy” Donaldson) in September 2024, has encountered significant issues following consumer reports of mold contamination.
Marketed as a fun and convenient alternative to similar products like Lunchables, Lunchly includes a Prime Hydration drink, a Feastables bar and a selection of meal options such as “The Pizza” and “Fiesta Nachos.” However, the brand’s reputation came under fire when videos surfaced showing mold in the shredded mozzarella cheese used in its pizza meals—months before the labeled expiration date.
These videos, initially shared by TikTok users and prominent content creators, spurred a wave of concern and backlash online. The viral nature of these reports fueled speculation about whether the product had been recalled. Some social media users even shared images of purported notices from grocery stores indicating a recall due to FDA concerns. This prompted Paul to address the situation directly. On Oct. 28, 2024, he released a video dismissing the recall rumors as fabricated, noting that any legitimate recall would be publicly registered by the FDA. According to Paul, a supposed recall sign at a store was confirmed to be a false, independently created notice.
Paul also stated that all Lunchly products undergo rigorous safety checks, including oversight by the USDA, before they reach the market. Despite these assurances, the mold controversy has caused tangible repercussions for the brand. While there has been no formal recall, reports suggest that certain grocery stores removed Lunchly products from their shelves as a precaution, contributing to further consumer confusion.
Lunchly’s challenges are the latest in a series of food-related controversies for its high-profile creators. For instance, MrBeast’s past venture, MrBeast Burger, faced quality complaints, including accusations of undercooked food, which ultimately led to lawsuits. This recent mold issue threatens to impact Lunchly’s standing as a credible product, despite Paul’s efforts to assure the public and clarify the situation. The broader impact on sales and brand loyalty remains to be seen, especially as customers weigh health concerns against the high-profile endorsements behind the product.
