With the high school volleyball season coming to an end, the state B, A and AAA volleyball tournaments were held this past weekend at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. As the matches dragged on and on, like many others, my hunger became apparent, so I decided to check out the concessions. They had a variety of food anywhere from cotton candy to chili and refried beans, so my family, friends and I decided to give a few foods a try.
The first food that caught my attention were the french fries. They looked filling and were only $5.50, which was not much compared to the other food options. I ordered them expecting to get a flimsy amount, but, much to my surprise, the basket was decently filled. When I went to grab my condiments, the ketchup was all out and there was only one ranch left, so I grabbed the ranch and a barbeque packet. The ranch was really disappointing, but the barbeque sauce was very tasty. Overall, the fries were seasoned nicely, just a little too salty.
One of my friends, Julia, decided to splurge on the chicken strips which were $10 for only two tenders. She wanted something that would fill her up; however, this was not the right choice as the tenders were tiny and the basket only came with two. The ratio of breading to chicken was off as there was little to no chicken in each strip.
Later that day, my dad ordered the Kansas City dog, which is a hot dog with brisket on the top. Although nothing on the menu sounded good, he had to eat something because we had been there for four hours already and he was extremely hungry. Similar to his expectations, the hot dog was not the best. The brisket was dry and the hot dog was just average. He did not care, however, because he was so hungry.
One of my dad’s friends, Ryan Noonan, ordered the chili nachos and believed “The chili may have been blended with refried beans and laxatives,” said Noonan. As one may have guessed the chili nachos did not go well with his stomach. With his chili nachos, he ordered two sodas, a water and a popcorn which all came out to a total of $40. This is a little on the pricey side but worth it because his family was so hungry.
Overall, the concessions were expensive but worth it to almost everyone. I would recommend the french fries and Kansas City dog, but not the chicken tenders or chili nachos. The event itself was very entertaining, so the concessions would not deter me from returning again.
