2024 has been a pretty great year for cinema. It seems that the number of movies being produced and their quality have caught up since the decline in movie production since COVID-19. Let’s take a look at the top 5 movies released last year.
5) Wicked: Coming in at number 5 is the long-awaited film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical “Wicked.” The film stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The highlight of this movie of course, is the music. Both Grande and Erivo are some of the most talented singers in the world right now, and their amazing vocals are what placed this movie in the top five.
4) Wonka: “Wonka” was released early in 2024, and is a prequel to the original 1971 “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” It tells the story of how Willy Wonka, played by Timothee Chalamet, became the esteemed chocolatier and factory owner people know and love. It is a musical and has some catchy songs, but it also has a good plot and characters. It is a little quirky and weird, but in a fun way. Overall, it is a great movie to see with your family.
3) Inside Out Two: The sequel to the popular “Inside Out,” “Inside Out Two” is considered by many to be even better than the original. The movie’s main character, Riley, is much older in this film, somewhere in her early teens. This lets the movie delve into more mature topics and introduce more complex emotions such as anxiety and embarrassment. “Inside Out Two” has a great theme about how all emotions have positive and negative aspects, suggesting that the key is making sure to balance your emotions and not get focused on just one. Both teenagers and adults can learn a lot from this emotional masterpiece.
2) Dune Part Two: “Dune: Part Two” is yet another sequel considered to be better than the original. It stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya as the two main protagonists, both among the biggest upcoming young actors right now. Fans were disappointed that Zendaya’s character did not get much screen time in the first movie. In this second film, however, she gets almost as much as Chalamet. Set on a desert planet called Arakkis, the film is filled with beautiful shots and moments and has some of the best cinematography ever filmed. This film is often seen as the modern “Star Wars,” so fans of sci-fi and fantasy should definitely check it out.
1) Deadpool and Wolverine: “Deadpool and Wolverine” is the introduction of Deadpool into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Before this production, the Deadpool franchise had solely belonged to the Fox Cinematic Universe, along with the X-Men, but this film has combined the two universes into one multiverse. Fans of the Deadpool franchise were afraid that Disney would tone it down to be less edgy, but it still is very adult. It is the highest-grossing rated R film of all time and is filled with offensive jokes, sexual content and gore. Hugh Jackman returns to his role of Wolverine after a seven-year break and is looking as ripped as ever at 50 years old. This film is a hilarious and fun film to watch with your friends but probably not to watch with your parents.
