Selena Gomez has not released an album in four years. Her new album, “I Said I Love You First” was made with her fiancé Benny Blanco, and released March 21, 2025. This is Gomez’s fourth studio album and Blanco’s second. The album consists of 14 songs, adding up to 34 minutes and 38 seconds long. Some songs feature talented artists like Gracie Abrams and The Marias. A special part of this album is that a couple of the songs feature parts that are sung in Spanish. Track four is even titled in Spanish, “Ojos Tristes” which translates to “sad eyes.”
The album starts out with “I Said I Love You First” which is a short speech from Gomez; she thanks everyone who has got her to this point in her career and watched her grow up. This short 45-second speech is the perfect start to the album and shows how proud and grateful she is for the people around her during the process of making the album. Track 10, titled “Do You Want To Be Perfect” is another short speech. It talks about unrealistic body expectations and standards set by current social media. Gomez interrupts by saying, “No more of the unrealistic standards of perfect… Actually, just be exactly who you are.” This is a perfect message to send to listeners and it sets the tone for the album. This short message also shows what Gomez stands for and what type of person she is.
At first, when listening to this album I was not sure I liked it. The songs are usually not the type of music I enjoy listening to, but as I started listening to them more I realized I was humming along and sometimes even dancing. Most of the songs are catchy and have a relaxing beat that is perfect for listening to when driving, cleaning your room, doing homework, walking to class or doing laundry or dishes.
My top three songs from the album would be “How Does It Feel To Be Forgotten,” “You Said You Were Sorry” and “Cowboy.” These songs are fantastic, and not only are the instruments and beats perfect, but the lyrics are also amazing.
The song “Cowboy” features Gomez’s best vocals on the album by far. This song also has incredible rhythms and beats to dance to. This song is about being in love and hoping the one you love will be by your side and never leave you. The lyrics “Say You’ll Never Leave” and “You’re mine” reflect this idea.
“How Does It Feel To Be Forgotten” is a heartfelt song that many people listening can relate to. “You’re so embarrassin’, Go cry when no one’s watchin’” are lyrics I bet everyone can relate to because many people tend to think that crying is an embarrassing thing that should only be done in private.
“You Said You Were Sorry” is the type of song that takes you to another dimension and sounds like a dream. Even Gomez says in her lyrics “I had a dream.” This “dream” she had is about an ex who had finally apologized after that had both since moved on. This song’s lyrics are some of her best songwriting on the album.
My least favorite songs from the album would be “Bluest Flame” and “Sunset Blvd.” These songs are not the type of songs I would pick to listen to on a daily basis.
I don’t enjoy listening to “Bluest Flame” because it sounds like a remix or something you would listen to at a party. I didn’t connect to it or find myself humming along or dancing to it. Usually when this song comes on I skip it.
The reason I do not like “Sunset Blvd” is because the lyrics are interesting and I do not love the parts of the song where Gomez puts an emphasis on certain lyrics. This song is not really my jam and I would rather listen to other songs on the album.
Overall, I would say this album was Incredible and definitely worth the four-year wait for Gomez to release new music. All of these songs are also a fantastic reflection and representation of Gomez and Blanco’s love for each other. This album is so creative and a work of art. It features some of Gomez’s best vocals and other amazing artists. I would recommend this album because there will definitely be at least one song that will be stuck in your head and will find yourself humming throughout the day.
