Easter is a vibrant celebration that holds significant differences for each family and culture. For many, it is a cherished tradition passed down through generations. Among the LHS households, an array of similar customs come alive each year.
Everett Urbina Lynde goes over to his grandma’s house to look for eggs. “After mass, we would arrive at her house. We would eat a feast and then someone would say the Easter Bunny told them that he hid the eggs. So, then we were off, searching high and low on her 11-acre plot…It’s been a long time since I have done it, as I know the bunny sadly doesn’t exist but I get to see my little cousins go running around in the lawn, laughing at them as they try and try and try to find all the eggs,” said Lynde.
Juliet Meyers drives down to Vermilion to visit family in their Austin-Whittemore House to have lunch filled with several kinds of food. “My family Easter tradition is we wake up and my parents hide an Easter basket filled with a chocolate bunny, Cadbury eggs, robins’ eggs and peeps [then] watch CBS News Sunday Morning. Only if we’re feeling it, we hide easter eggs around outside and try to find them. We end our day full of food and putting together a puzzle,” said Meyers.
Most families follow Easter throughout its religious attachments. Throughout the week, there are events Jesus experienced or did before his death as his final acts alive. The most important days are the last three days of the week. On Friday, Jesus faced his unjust trial according to the Bible. He was crucified on the cross after enduring immense suffering. On Saturday, friends and followers mourned the grief of Jesus’ death. On Sunday, Jesus rose again from the tomb, defying death and proving his powerful testament. Now, people rejoice in Jesus’ resurrection.
Although not every family follows religious traditions, this season can also represent the end of winter’s chill and the warmth of summer just around the corner. It is a new beginning with changes in nature, welcoming sunlit days and the arrival of warmer weather.
