Spring represents change and new beginnings. This applies to the birth of new animals, a time to better yourself or the blossoming of plants. One of the most popular plants that bloom this time of year is cherry blossoms. This plant is a traditional Japanese flower that grows on cherry trees. The flowers can bloom in various shades of pink and white. The beauty of cherry blossoms never wavers each year they bloom.
For years, these trees have flowered, drawing in tourists across the world. Japan is a popular destination spot for tourists flocking to catch a glimpse of these trees. This country is home to millions of cherry blossom trees, creating a wondrous sight wherever you go. The temperate climate of Japan provides the perfect environment for these trees to grow. Parts of North America and Europe are also home to cherry blossoms. The most important weather pattern that allows them to grow is the cold winters, letting them become dormant, and the warm summers for growth. Usually, the blooming process begins at the end of March or early April.
As the trees continue to grow, blooming each year and then going dormant, the number of blossoms and the overall size of the tree increases. The most famous cherry tree in Japan is Miharu Takizakura, in Miharu, Japan. It is over 1,000 years old and has an abundance of blossoms. As more blossoms have grown over the years, they have begun to fall in a cascade of flowers similar to a waterfall. This display is where the tree got its name; Takizakura means “cherry blossom waterfall.” Takizakura is also considered a national monument. During the night, a bath of light illuminates the tree, lighting it up for everyone to see as they pass by.
Here in Sioux Falls, there is not quite the same number of trees, but there is still an opportunity to see them. The Terrace Park Japanese Garden has a handful of cherry blossom trees to offer. The paths along Covell Lake give a wonderful view of these trees and the surrounding plants and animals. As the weather gets warmer, there will be more chances to see the sights in person. A slow Saturday afternoon is the perfect time to take a walk in nature.
Movies and pop culture also use the cherry blossom in their storylines. One example is the classic Disney movie “Mulan.” In the beginning, Mulan is trying her hardest to bring honor to her family. When she feels as though she’s failed, her dad brings her comfort. As he is talking to her, he makes a comment about the cherry blossoms and how one hadn’t yet bloomed. He says it needs more time until it is ready. That is exactly what they represent. The new beginnings that are yet to come and the change that is already occurring. Everyone takes time to bloom and thrive, just like cherry blossoms.
